Keith Payne is a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina, where studies the behavioral effects of social inequalities. This work sheds light on why nations and states with greater inequality have dramatically poorer outcomes in health and social wellbeing. The effects of inequality are explained, in part, by how inequalities change the ways people compare themselves to others and, as a result, think and behave differently. Payne is a leader also in the study of implicit bias, where he has developed methods to better measure implicit bias and theoretical models to understand how cognitive processes contribute to racial disparities. He has published more than 80 articles and book chapters, and co-edited the Handbook of Implicit Social Cognition. This work is synthesized in his book, The Broken Ladder: How Inequality Affects the Way We Think, Live, and Die.
